The Monastery of St. Cyril is one of the most valuable and brilliant architectural complexes in Yaroslavl. The stone building of the late 17th century miraculously survived to the present day, although it has more than once been on the brink of oblivion. Fortunately, it is part of a large number of monuments of Yaroslavl, which has not been left in the course of history and so has managed to defend and preserve the only monastery of Orthodox monks of the city. Although the monastery is being restored, to get acquainted with it, you can see in the churches how cults are regularly conducted, and how the monastic body is filled with novices again.
A little history
Researchers have not found yet the exact date of the foundation of St. Cyril’s monastery. Most believe that the monastery appeared in the city in 1615. It was about to close but flourished at the same time. In 1918, during the Civil War, the temple complex was severely damaged since the bombing, two churches were destroyed and a residential building was burned. In 1925 the monastery was closed.
In 2007 the building was returned to the Orthodox community, but with broken windows and mountains of garbage. Restoration work is still ongoing.
¿What can you see?
The courtyard of the monastery has some landmarks. The oldest of them is the stone church of St. Cyril, built in 1664, in which its painting was adorned by moscow masters. This columnless church has a hollow head and drum, this architecture is rather unusual for Yaroslavl. After a few centuries the construction of the church of St. Cyril received several chapels and galleries. Another church of the monastery is the Church of the Savior, and the Proboinskaya Savior. Its main treasure is the icon of the Savior, who has just returned from the Holy Trinity Church in Smolensk, and the relics of Saint Afanasiya Aleksandriyskogo.
The modest interior of the church is decorated with a pale blue. Almost all the walls of the building were constructed at the end of the 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th, which were decorated with icons.
The church has a refectory, where from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, you can satisfy your hunger with delicious Russian cuisine made with local organic ingredients.
