The Cathedral of St. George in Gus-Khrustalny

The Cathedral of St. George is the main attraction of Gus-Khrustalny. It is an orthodox church of the 20th century of Vladimir’s area of influence making it famous throughout the Russian Empire. The fact is that today the Cathedral of St. George is a symbol of the city known as the Crystal Museum in Maltsov, which is a large part of the tourist circuit of Gus-Khrustalny. The museum is dedicated to different themes separately, but currently there are some facts from the history of the same temple. The Cathedral of St. George in Gus-Khrustalny was built in 1903 thanks to merchants of the Maltsov industrial dynasty – Yuri Nechayev-Maltsova.

The construction of the cathedral was managed by one of the most famous Russian architects of the time, Leontiy Benua. The temple turned out to be extremely surprising in beauty and became an ornament not only for the city, but a part of the whole of Vladimir province inside St. George’s Cathedral in Gus-Khrustalnyl, in addition to the traditional traps, works by the artist Victor Vasnetsov are exhibited. Unfortunately, only two paintings survived, the painting of “The Last Judgment” and a mosaic entitled “On you rejoice, highly favored!” All because the cathedral was damaged and usurped during the Soviet era, however, like many orthodox monasteries in the country, it has undergone significant changes. In the temple were demolished the dome tower and the bell permanently. Subsequently, the cathedral was given the needs and work of the palace to be restored.

Only decades later the Cathedral of St. George in Gus-Khrustalny was able to return to its original form but fifty-fifty. The best restorers of the temple have worked in the restoration, especially guests of St. Petersburg. But in spite of all the work and hope of the fields, the cathedral did not become operative.

Today, the exhibition hall of St George’s Cathedral in Gus-Khrustalny, as it has been previously said, is the Maltsov Crystal Museum.

Hours: Monday to Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., from Thursday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. During the holidays, the work of the temple during normal hours. By the way, in the evenings, the Cathedral of St. George in Gus-Khrustalny includes a backlight and becomes something beautiful and special.
