The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, near Bogolyubov miraculously survived until today. Unlike other cathedrals in Vladimir it was threatened by fires and raids by the Tatar-Mognolskoy army; and even by militant atheists of the Communist era, and the very representatives of the Orthodox Church.

The Church of Intercession on the Nerl was built by Andrew Bogolyubsky in memory of his beloved son Izyaslav; who died during the campaign of Vladimir’s troops on the Volga in Bulgaria. The white stone was used to make the front of the temple where it is rumored that it was carried out as compensation.

The temple is still quite new in Russia, where celebrations of the Virgin are held; which, with the consent of the Patriarch of Constantinople and Metropolitan of Kiev; was presented by Prince Andrew as evidence of the patronage of the Virgin of Vladimir-Suzdal.

The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl was built in a meadow and isolated near the river Nerl; the place was chosen by the prince. There it looked, of course, very picturesque, however; it floods during the spring rains, so an artificial hill had to be built because of this. During the period of flooding the temple is completely surrounded by the waters of the river; getting close to the very walls.

Explore the Church of Intercession on the Nerl

Although this temple is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Russian architecture, structurally it is very simple to the usual transverse temples. The proportions of the temple are considered very delicate, and the composition is simple, which, compared to the greatness and richness of the Cathedral of the Assumption, was to symbolize the victory of spirit over matter.

The builders of the temple used several special techniques to give the mind to the details of the temple and weightlessness. The walls of the temple are inclined slightly inward to visually increase the height, even more emphasis is placed on the narrow windows, elongated columns, and elongated dome drum.

Outside the walls, the facades are decorated with traditional white stone carvings from Vladimir’s cathedral. The three walls repeat the same story of King David, sitting on a throne and surrounded by doves and lions. According to the excavation, the temple was previously surrounded by an open gallery, decorated with bright tiles.

The main foods of Buriatia and Baikal’s cuisine

What are the main foods of Buriatia and Baikal’s cuisine? We tell you now.

Pozi or Buuzi

Pozi resembles the Caucasian hinkali, Chinese manti türk or baozi. Buuzi look like pelmeni but are much bigger. They are made of wheat dough and have exactly 33 tweezers, they are steamed, inside they have meat and chopped onions. The pozi are said to resemble yurt houses (tents of Central Asian and Siberian nomads) because of their round shape and hole at the top. They serve them on a large plate that they put in the center of the table from where everyone can pick them up. They eat them only with their hands – first they take a bite of the bottom, drink all the broth inside and then they eat the rest. This national dish has its own Buuzin Bayar festival, which is held in February in the capital of Buriatia Ulan-Ude. In the city’s central square you can taste dozens of types of pozi, watch some contests and tournaments.
