FIFA and the Russian Organizing Committee 2018 agreed on the official names of the stadiums, where the world championship matches will take place. The names of the eight stadiums match the names of the cities where they are located. Four other names will be related to local cultural or soccer aspects. Luzhnikí owes its name to the neighborhood where the sand is located. Spartak Stadium has the name of the most famous football club, to which the sand belongs. Mordovia Arena received its name in honor of the Republic of Mordovia. And the Fischt Stadium was named as a mountain in the western part of the Greater Caucasus. Only one sand is already fully prepared. It’s the Spartak stadium. The stadiums in Kazan and Sochi are not yet ready to host football matches.
Moscow Luzhniki Stadium
In the legendary Luzhnikí stadium in Moscow, the Olympic Games of the 80s, and the final of the UEFA Cup and the Champions League have already taken place. Also in the summer of 2018 here we can see the opening and the end of the World Cup. The athletic tracks around the pitch were the essential imperfection of the Luzhniki because they separated the field from the fans’ stands. After the reconstruction this will be forgotten. The grandstands will be closer to the field and will have two levels.
Nizhny Novgorod Stadium
The sand will be surrounded by a wavy semitransparent façade. At night the stadium will light up. For now the construction is in the initial stage: at the end of August began the pile driving, which must be completed at the end of autumn. After this, the construction of the first floor of the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium will begin.
Mordovia Arena in Saransk
The Saransk stadium could have the most unusual name – Shumbrat Arena. But in the end they called it Mordovia Arena because it’s easier to pronounce. Sand already reflects the contours. Today the base of the stadium is completely formed and the construction reached the level of nine meters.
Samara Arena in Samara
One of the parties of the Russian team in the group stage will be in the city located on the bank of the Volga river. The stadium had to be called Arena Cosmos. But the name was changed to a simpler one that is Samara Arena. The construction of the stadium began in the summer of 2014.
Spartak Stadium in Moscow
The football club Spartak won its own stadium in 2014. The first match in this arena took place on September 5, 2014. It was the match between FC Spartak and Red Star of Serbia. At the moment this arena is the best in the country and is ready to receive World Cup matches.
Volgograd Arena in Volgograd
The construction of the arena began in March of this year. Now it is made in nine percent. The construction is a bit delayed, but the builders do not worry – the sand will be ready at the same time.
Yekaterinburg Arena in Yekaterinburg
Although the reconstruction of the stadium in Yekaterinburg began in December last year, the complete construction has just begun. On September 7, 2015, the first pouring of concrete structures took place. Despite the first snow, the workers began the foundation of the grandstand south of the stadium.
St. Petersburg Stadium
Now they work with the sliding roof assembly. In addition workers place seats and install mobile soccer field. The installation of a system that at any time of the year guarantees the temperature 21 degrees inside the stadium was completed very shortly.
Kazan Arena in Kazan
The stadium in Kazan was built in 2013. There was the spectacular ceremony of the opening and closing ceremony of the Summer Universiade. After the competitions they were reforming the arena for a long time. However now you can not play football in the Kazan Arena. In August of this year in Kazan, the World Cup of water sports was held. For this reason the sand was reformed for the third time and became a pool.
The construction of the stadium in Kaliningrad has not started yet. They recently finished strengthening the shore as the stadium will be located on Oktyabrsky Island. At the beginning of September the first pile was placed at the base of the arena.
Rostov Arena in Rostov-on-Don
The new stadium will be built on the left bank of the Don. The installation of the foundation is completely finished. The pace of the construction of the stadium is really impressive.
Fisht Stadium in Sochi
Fisht Stadium was built especially for the Sochi Olympic Games and opened in 2014. Everyone saw the opening and closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in this arena. Especially for the World Cup they began to rebuild the stadium to make it football and now it fully meets the requirements of FIFA.
