St. George’s Cathedral in Gus-Khrustalny, Russia

St. George’s Cathedral is the main attraction of Gus-Khrustalny. It is a 20th century Orthodox church in Vladimir’s area of influence for which it is famous throughout the Russian Empire. The fact is that today St. George’s Cathedral is a symbol of the city known as the Crystal Museum in Maltsov, which is a large part of the Gus-Crystal tour. The museum is dedicated to different themes separately, but currently there are some facts about the history of the temple itself. St. George’s Cathedral in Gus-Khrustalny was built in 1903 thanks to the merchants of the Maltsov – Yuri Nechayev-Maltsova industrial dynasty.

The construction of the cathedral was managed by one of the most famous Russian architects of the time, Leontiy Benua. The temple proved to be extremely beautiful and became an ornament not only of the city, but a part of the whole Vladimir region. Inside St. George’s Cathedral in Gus-Khrustalny, in addition to the traditional traps, works by the artist Victor Vasnetsov are on display. Unfortunately, only two paintings survived, the painting of “The Last Judgment” and a mosaic entitled “On you rejoice, much favoured”, all because the cathedral was damaged and usurped during the Soviet era, however, like many Orthodox monasteries in the country, it has undergone significant changes. In the temple, the dome tower and the bell were demolished permanently. Subsequently, the cathedral was given the needs and work activities of the palace to be restored.

Only decades later the Cathedral of St. George in Gus-Khrustalny was able to return to its more or less original form. We worked on the restoration with the best restorers of the temple, especially guests from St. Petersburg. But in spite of all the work and hope of the faithful, the cathedral was not able to become operational.

Today, the exhibition hall of St. George’s Cathedral in Gus-Khrustalny, as mentioned above, is the Maltsovsky Khrustalny Museum.
